Op Division Photographers Mate 3 ( PH -3)
I have always enjoyed telling my friends and family of the good times and bad while on the big T. As a Navy photographer I do have some cool pictures, and a 1964 cruise book. Some would say that on Aug.2 1964 & Aug.4 1964 the Gulf of Tonkin thing never happened. I was there and I processed the film from all the plane's that took part in attacking the boats and oil tanks. Oil storage tanks make a big flame when hit with a Zuni rocket. I'll always say the best part of my life was being a crew member on he Ticonderoga. I was 19 an 20 now I'm almost 70. Op Div. was small only had 10 guys but we worked arm in arm to get the job done, the Cruise book took a lot of our time but we got.

Far East Cruise on Ticonderoga with Carrier Air Group Eleven,
Squadron VF-112, in1956 VF-112 won the

Aboard Ticonderoga with Carrier Air Group Eleven, VF-112, Far East Cruise. Diverted to sail between China and Formosa (Taiwan) to keep the peace. Lost 13 men due to flightdeck accidents and messhall fire. Spent Christmas of 1957 in Hong Kong. Off loaded Air Group two months Jan. 58, NAS Atsugi,Japan
Capt. speech told us to never mention strange plane flying to an from Atsugi, He was told same! Found out in 1964 it was a U2 spyplane ,saw picture in newspaper when Francis Powers was shot down over Russia! Big problem I had was on flightdeck as plane captain. Jet blast filled our clothes with splinters, HAD to change at noon each day, then spend hour each eve picking splinters from teak flightdeck. Most griped, I loved the chow and each minute I spent on the big T. VF-112 was flying McDonald F3H-2M 16 ton Deamons, first squadron in Navy with 2 different missiles. Sparrow and Sidewinders. I was 19 an 20 years, today I am 75. God Bless Navel Air Power! VF- 112 won the prestigious Fleet Air Gunnery Meet in 1956!

Lots of great memories from Shellback initiations ,the Apollo 16 and 17 and Skylab missions and best of all , The Tico cabanas in all the ports of Westpac and the tropical working hours the year around. Tico was the only ship that had those 2 features that I know of
Patrick Maluy@ 10:31pm 09-03-2013
Did anyone know my dad, Easton "Tack" Maluy? He served on Tico, but I have no information about when and where. If you can help, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Aircraft handler hangar bay 3. Nickname (Deadtooth). Good times, good Liberty in all the ports for replenishment. Subic, Olongapo, Pagsanyan Falls, Yokusuka, Sasebo, Singapore and some more. Anyone recall when we crossed the Equator in 67 and we had to crawl through the long laundry bags filled with garbage while they beat us with old pieces of firehoses? Hah, that was pretty gross.
Jim Winchester@ 4:13am 08-31-2013
Not really, Joe as I wasn't even born. I just have a bit of a database to help me write about the 1965-66 Tico cruise. Always looking to hear from veterans of the period, particularly with memories of accidents, incidents and rescues. a4sforever [at] aol.com

Winchester, you've got one helluva good memory.
Jim Winchester@ 12:24pm 08-30-2013
To answer Gerald's question, the XO in November 1965 was Earl F. Godfrey. He was replaced by Lynn W. Adams on 13 December 1965. I don't know if this was a normal rotation or not, but Capt Godfrey went off to the Navy Program Approval Office.
